Summer homeschooling review using Abeka phonics for to be 5th grader.
|
Question:
I would like to use ABeka phonics this summer for homeschooling as
opposed to what the public school sends home as a refresher for the
students. It would be for a 4th grader going into fifth that had
three years of ABeka in a private school (K-5 to 2nd). The private
school only did a fair job in first and second grade. K-5 teacher for
ABeka was outstanding. Student didn't have a solid foundation of
phonics in either the first or second grade and of course the public
school has failed miserably the past two years.
Would using the ABeka homeschool phonics books be sufficient to bring
student up to speed? I do have the ABeka "A Handbook for Reading" for
the student, but do not have the teacher's edition. I noticed a newer
version for homeschoolers in ABeka catalog that I do not recall being
there before called, "Homeschool Language Arts" and then a grade
level. What should I get in order to bring someone without a solid
phonics foundation up to grade level?
I checked out when ABeka would be in our area and it's not until
almost the fall.
Answer: - Whenever this question comes up I always give the same answer. Alpha
Phonics. My public library had a copy, so I was able to use it with one
child for free. After that we found a copy at a yard sale.
In the past people have given other suggestions, but the last time the
subject was mentioned, there weren't any other suggestions. Certainly
Alpha Phonics isn't the only program to help kids learn phonics.
- I bought a book entitled _Phonics and Spelling Manual, Part I_, several
years ago. It was purchased from Alpha Omega and I believe it is now part of
the Horizons Phonics program, but I don't know for sure. Since we haven't
taught phonics for a few years I don't have any other recommendations.
