Homeschooling in Florida???
|
Question:
I am wondering if any of you are in Florida. If you are
how are you complying with state laws? Do you have any words of advice
for homeschooling there? We are considering purchasing a home there
and I was just wondering. I have researched the laws for the area but
I am seeking your persoanl experience.
Answer: - This will be my first year actually having to be legal in Florida, but
from the reports I get from my friends, the once a year evaluation is not
onerous. I already keep a log of all the sit-down school work we do and I
have been getting better at typing up the non-standard work we do. I will
probably have -way- too much information by the time I have to talk to the
evaluator.
- We comply with the state law by having a certified teacher evaluate
our younger two every year. We satisfy the law with our oldest two by
having them take the SAT test. We used to homeschool under the
umbrella of a Christian School, and in this situation our evaluation
was through the school and the children took the Standford Ach tests
every year.
- How do you compare your experience with the two, (umbrella school and
on you own)? I am presently under a umbrella school and I don't see a
need for it now. I joined it transferring from Spain thinking that I
would need help with all the legalities in CA. But it isn't as bad as
I thought and it served it's purpose as a security blanket. I am
keeping the same records that I was keeping in Spain except now I turn
them in to the school and I pay for them to "certify" them. Once in
Florida I think I will go back to keeping the records myself and
having him evaluated. And use the extra money for supplies.
