Homeschool ADD and learning disabilities
|
Question:
I am homeschooling my 14 year old son. He has such a hard time
learning that it seems like we never get anything done. He can focus
fo about 10 mins at a time and needs a long break in between before he
can work again. The curriculum for his age is far too advanced to we
are working on: typing, writing, math(long division at the moment) and
reading. It seems to me that with so few subjects that we could cover
them all every day but it isn't working.
Does anyone else have a kid with serious problems? How do you teach
them?
Answer: first off, if the curriculum that you are using is too advanced, then
use one at a lower level. If he is only capable of 4th grade work, then do
4th grade level work rather than 8th grade level. If he is given work at
an appropriate skill level, he'll get less frustrated and be more likely to
concentrate.
Does he have diagnosed ADD and learning disabilities? If he has ADD, is he
being treated for it? Treatment might help him be more able to concentrate
and feel less frustrated.
The only other thing I can say with the info you've given is that maybe you
need to let him learn by doing rather than by using school book type work.
Maybe have him build something, cook, repair some small appliances, design
something, etc. The more you can get him interested in something, the more
likely it is that he will concentrate on it.
