On topic: Lesson plans
|
Question:
I got ambitious this week (School starts Monday)
and did my lesson plans.
Question: how far in advance does one plann
the lessons?
Answer: -now I plan one to two weeks ahead of time. Used to plan by the grading
period, but it's not flexible enough. Where I used to teach in public school
we planned, as a team (all 9th grade teachers in Study Skills taught the same
lesson plans...district policy) for the entire semester, so it's what I was
used to. I know there's a lot of pressure from various directions to write lesson
plans. But I have a few questions you might want to consider.
-How much weight will your children gain this school year? How many
inches will they grow in stature? What new interests will they develop?
What great events will warrant their attention? What once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities will arise? How much rain or snow will fall in your area?
When I have the answers to those questions, I'll be able to make lesson
plans for the whole school year.
-I plan one week in advance. I occasionally leave Friday as a non-school
day or a light schedule day to finish up any work we didn't finish
Mon-Thurs. and we try to do thing like going to the Library on Fridays.
But, I'm getting better (finally!) at knowing just how much my kids can do
in one day. We hardly ever have unfinished work at the end of the day
anymore ... hey, I think that must be progress .
I used to plan 6-8 weeks in advance then I'd get frustrated because we'd
miss a day or get behind and my plans would get all messed up. One year I
even rewrote my entire lesson plan book (sick, I know LOL) because I
couldn't stand that it was "off".
