Exploring homeschooling - questions???
|
Question:
I've lurked a little while and would like to ask some questions.
My son is 12 and been in public schools. We've been very unhappy the last
couple of years. (he has been also) One of the issues we're faced with is
that my son is extremely active in his school's sports programs. We live
in OH and were told that if we homeschool he will not be allowed to play
sports or any other extra-curriculur activities.
I've read some posts that say by law he is allowed to. Can anyone point me
to where I can find this law to show to the school? Also, we're
contemplating a move to TN. Are the laws any better there?
Answer: - You can check laws by state at http://www.homeschoolzone.com/yp/
Some places have city leagues, etc. where home schoolers are welcome to
play. Some home school support groups are large enough as well. YMCA and
YWCA may also be an option. Whether or not a student can partake of any
public school activity or not depends on the state law which varies by
locality.
- They are many teams apart from schools that would
welcome your son.......also some homeschooling groups
form their own leagues...........call around.....or
check out the library.....some groups leave notices there.......
and check out the link for TN........

- Where iin Ohio do you live? We moved from Canton abut 10 months ago. I
wasn't very happy with the schools when we returned (my husband spent 10
years in the Navy) and chose to homeschool. It is my understanding that
in Ohio if you are not enfrolled in school you can not participate in
extracurricular activities. The one thing that I know that a lot fo
people did to get around this is enroll their children part time, they
go to school for two or three days a week or for certain classes. It
really takes working with the schools on this one since half of your
sons education would come from you and the other half from ps. but it
also gives him the right to participate in sports. Like others said,
look into the Y, your community centers and youth groups, there are
homeschool groups that have orginized sports.
