Homeschooling Questions?
|
Question:
I have a supplementary question: assuming you aren't using the local school
at all, where do students learn public speaking and debating? Drama can be
picked up through the local dramatic society, but what if there isn't one?
Answer: -
Very few public school students take public speaking and debating. It is
usually an elective in the upper grades, it is not uncommon for students in
the US to get to college before taking a public speaking class, if they do
even then. As for homeschoolers, many support groups have "presentation
days" where groups of homeschoolers get together to read stories, give
recitations, etc......not to mention the homeschool drama clubs, which are
usually much more inclusive than community theater groups.
-Because public schools often teach things that are contrary to the beliefs and
values of the family, because public schools are often seen as an unsafe
environment for children.
There are a wide range of online resources. Cousins of mine have a daughter who
is now high school age and is too old for the K-8 homeschool cooperative that
her church was running (which involved classroom sessions). Her parents are
unable to afford a private Christian school, and do not want to send her to
public school, nor dies she wish to attend. She has friends at church that
attend public schools and they have told her what it's like. My cousins were
able to order all the curriculum, check the state's requirements for
"graduation" for homeschoolers, and even check out listings of colleges that
accept home-school credits.
BTW, many colleges pay special attention to home-schoolers, because they tend
to be better-educated, are more self-motivated in learning and studies, and
have a wider range of knowledge than kids from public schools. At least the
sort of knowledge that carries over well into college.
