School teachers aren't important
|
Question:
Can it be that quality education does not require quality teachers?
That's what one schoolteacher claims - and persuasively. The
presentation "Welcome To The Sandbox" is found on the website of the
Dana Literary Society, www.danaliterary.org. Members of the
educational establishment may read it at their own discomfort.
Answer: -It amazes me that we can wonder and lament about the lack of quality
education in this country, then turn around and show disrespect for
teachers, and by extension, education. Does no one see the irony here??
For the record, I'm a homeschool teacher.
-Nothing Ironic here at all. The US system of education is beneath contempt and
99% of the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the education system
especially the teachers.
The teachers should be held in contempt for their failure not praised.
The original posters notion that "Quality education does not require quality
teachers" is a point of debate, not "disrepect". Too often "quality" teachers
is not defined in any way that could be objectively referred to "quality".
First things first. To improve teacher quality you must eliminate "education
degrees and education scools and education theory."
Then eliminate PPD's (professional "development")
Realize that the system is broken beyond repair and should be eliminated with a
new excellence based system in which no one who was part of the old system
would be allowed into.
-I was responsible for admissions testing at my last school. In two
unrelated cases, homeschool families applied and were turned down or demoted
to a lower grade because their basic skills were so far below our students'
that they couldn't even begin to function in the appropriate grade level.
Neither had a diagnosis or displayed signs of a disabling condidtion that
would have caused this. Their homeschool education was a complete failure
in terms of academics. However, I am a strong supporter of home schools and
I know many families who are experiencing tremendous success in their
homeschool work. Your
blanket condemnation of all teachers and educators is as unfair as it would
be for me to judge all homeschoolers by only those two families. And, by
the way, were you homeschooled as a child?
