Home Schooling Book Publishers???
|
Question:
I was wondering if anyone could tell me who publishes the best books for
home schooling. I am particularly interested in middle school and high
school ages. Also does anyone use software for teaching typing and
accounting? If so, which ones are best.
Answer: - Finding the best publisher for homeschooling
books depends on your educational method
and what will work best for your child. I put
together my own curriculum (and have been
doing so for 6 years) so I don't have any
specific publisher to recommend. For our 9th
grader we currently use Saxon for math and
Exploring Creation with Physical Science (by
Dr. Jay L. Wile) for science. For world history
we use Streams of Civilization (by Mary
Stanton & Albert Hyma). Mostly the book is
used as an outline and we look for period
literature and a variety of other sources to get a
basic overview of what was happening and
when it happened. I expect to let our 9th grader
delve into the whys in historical periods that
interest him. For Literature/ Composition we
study well written literature and look for the
reasons that it is well written and use that as a
benchmark to compare his work with. You need
a good foundation in the parts of speech and
grammar to have this approach work well.
We use Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and
have had great success with it. I don't know
what else is out there because we are very
satisfied with Mavis. We don't have any
software that teaches accounting and I don't
know about any software of that type on the
market.
