If you were building a house for a homeschooling family.

Question:
If you were going to build on a home library, how would you calculate the amount of shelving space you'd need for, oh, 8,000 books?

If you were going to remodel your house, what, if any, changes would you make to enhance homeschooling?

Answer:
-I have about 3000 books, and about 300 linear feet of shelves.

- If we manage to build the house we want, it will have a library with stacks and lighting and a book shelf ladder!

Another idea. On the inside wall of the great room, put large closets, one for the computer, one for sewing, one for art stuff, then one can close the doors to block the mess when company comes but leave the doors open as you work, so you are not separated from the family,

To calculate book shelf length, start measuring books and get some idea ....like 100 books take X many feet....extrapolate...and left room for the books you do not own yet.

-Unfortunately (for space considerations) we're going in the opposite direction. We presently have a big family room which is essentially all shelves for books, with some seating and a tv. However, we're about to downsize to an RV for a couple of years then a cruising sailboat for a couple of years. So I hafta figure out how to survive with a very limited amount of space. Which books are must-haves if I'm limited to about 2 cubic feet per person for books?

- Having lived on a boat for three years (plus a ship for another four) and an RV for two years, let me just say that the RV is a much more friendly environment for books. These were all in the days before CD's and DVD's.
