Information on home-schooling in Illinois
|
Question:
I have a 19 month old and am seriously considering home-schooling her.
Can anyone tell me the requirements for the state of Illinois? I am aware
that there is a home-schooling organization out of Naperville. How can I
contact them? Much information is needed to make this the best for my
children and myself.
Answer: Legally Illinois is one of the easiest states to Home School. Home Schools
are considered PRIVATE SCHOOLS in the state. Basically the law requires you
to:
1. teach your child the subjects of English, Literature, History,
Science, and Math and
2. that your curriculum/instruction/etc. is in English
Outside of these points, you are not required to do anything else, such as
getting approval, being tested, etc. What records you keep, how you test,
what areas you cover at what age is at your discretion.
Most of us give a name to our Home School and create a letter head for it.
Our School is called the Mary Fielding Smith Academy (after a great great
grandmother who taught school in Ohio in the 1830s).
There are several Home School Organizations state wide. There is a state
wide Christian based organization which has held their yearly convention in
Naperville over the past two years. I suspect that is the organization
you're referring to. I don't have their address off hand. Send me some
email and I will look it up for you.
Previously they held their convention up at Wheaton College. Their
convention is pretty nice (it always has a workshop on the legal side of
Home Schooling which I dutifully attend each year). Unfortunately, they've
already held their convention this year, but if you contact them, you'll
find that they have tape recordings of most of the sessions.
