Home Schooling in Washington State
|
Question:
I would like to know if anyone has info on home schooling in Washington
state. Is schooling required to teach home school? I have a 4 year old
and a 6 month old and would like to home school both of them.
Answer: -We are homeschooling our almost 13 yr old. boy for the first time in
the State of Washington. They never asked me if I was qualified to do
the teaching. They did recommend that I take a class at a college if
I felt I needed help. The local schools have been very supportive of
our efforts and thing that it is a wonderful idea that we are
homeschooling him. He is doing very well.
-You don't have to do anything until your hs'ed child is 8, and that's 8 by the
time the school year starts, so, while one of ours will be 8 in a few days, we
didn't have to register her this year.
You can homeschool under a few different options. If you have 60 hours of
college credit (I think it's 60, whatever most people get in two years) you can
homeschool. You just tell them on your registration form that you have that
many hours of college credit. I'm not aware that they check up on you-
although I am not, naturally, suggesting you indulge in a little creative
fiction writing on your paperwork.
If you have a certified teacher oversee your program you can homeschool, or
you can take a course offered at every college in the state on hs'ing. These
courses are also offered via correspondence by somebody, somewhere, but I don't
remember where. Those who have taken the course say it's extremely easy. Not
free, but very easy.
You can also participate in the cyber school program (I believe it has other
names in other parts of the state), but I know nothing about that except that
the child stays home most of the time and does homework assigned by a teacher
you meet with once a week.
