Information about Homeschooling in Massachusetts
|
Question:
I posted awhile ago, asking for suggestions as to how to get my mom to want to
homeschool me. Now I have two questions and was wondering if anyone could help
me. Does anyone know anything about homeschooling in Massachusetts? And also,
does anyone know how much maybe a tutor would cost? We basically don't know
anything about homeschooling and need as much information as possible. Thank
you so much for all your help, and thank you to those of you who replied to my
previous post.
Answer: - I'm not sure about how much tutors might be, or what are the laws
in Massachusetts, but many private schools offer part-time schooling,
and sometimes the public schools do, if your mother feels unqualified
to teach a particular subject like Chemistry.
Also your local community college may offer some course you could
take.
Also there are correspondence schools that you can take your high
school courses from, and receive a diploma. They are accredited, most
of them, one I know of for sure is Indiana University. They offer
accredited high school courses online for $66 a semester.
They're at http://www.extend.indiana.edu/hs/hmsch.htm
Also, the Homeschooling area on The Mining Co. is very helpful, visit
them at
http://homeschooling.miningco.com
they have lists of curriculum, long distance schools, different kinds
of homeschooling, etc.
-We homeschool in Arlington, MA.
Each city or town within Massachusetts has it's own set of homeschooling rules
to abide to.
I do know that Cambridge MA and Arlington have simple requests. They only ask
for a copy (usually one page long) of what and how you will be learning. For
example;
Math - Math Made Easy textbook and various workbooks.
English - Grammar Smart Junior, daily journal entries, penpal correspondence.
They like to see that every subject matter is covered. I have found old
textbooks at garage sales, used book stores and even the library. You don't
have to spend lots of money. You might want to list some classic books that
you will be reading (library is good for this), any trips to museums or
antional parks ( field trip like places).
As far at tutoring - you may be able to find one through a local college or a
parent who is willing to exchange babysitting hours for lessons.
