Canadian Homeschooling Program

Question:
I am a foster parent of 3 First Nations children. The youngest is a 9 year old girl. She has had social difficulties and some general learning difficulties unless guided one-on-one by her teacher or aide. She MAY have ADD/ADHD or some other neurological difficulties. She has been in our home for 2 years, and there hasn't been any change in her ability to learn, despite some measures being taken. All people concerned have expressed an opinion that homeschooling could be a good alternative. I would like to know what the best progams available are for her specific needs: 1) Canadian content, 2) native culture, and 3) ADD/ADHD targeted learning strategies. Can you please help?

Answer:
If the schools are suggesting homeschooling they may be willing to act as resources for materials, and curriculum. Even if they are I would strongly recomend you do some basic research on homeschooling and what is available. Homeschooling has the advantage that you can adapt the program precisely to her needs, and many children who have great difficulties in the school, after a period of time decompressing, thrive as homeschoolers. Online, you could start your search at the Canadian Homeschooling Resource Page http://www.flora.org/homeschool-ca/ There is also a Canadian homeschooling email list. It is a high volume list, but you may be able to find people there who are homeschooling with some or all of the same needs as you have. You can find information on subscribing to the list on the webpage referenced above.

I used to have bookmarks to several native culture sites, but several computer rearrangements and I can't find them anymore. I've come across some interesting native education related sites, but can't find any on a quick search right now. I did find this one http://www.abinfohwy.ca/ It seems fairly new but looks like it could eventually have some material useful to you.

If you are in the Ottawa area, the Odawa Native Friendship Centre, 12 Stirling Ave, 722-3811 might be a good real life place to start.
