Pagan Homeschooling and Unschooling?
|
Question:
I know this isn't this schools website, but I figured you could
probably hepl me more with this than the Christians could. Does
anyone know of a good pagan-friendly school program, or even a
good pagan-friendly school system? The schools here are good, but
extremely stressful and violent; few students get to graduation
without getting psychiatric help. Several of my friends got so
disturbed they pulled guns on people, and I ran with a *good* crowd!
My son is only 4 months old right now, but I was hoping to work on
reading with him when he's only 2 or so; I learned to read around 3,
so he'll probably be similar. (It seems to go that way in my family.)
I already read to him. I am considering trying to take him to my
college classes next year, at least part of the day, and keep him
in the college day care the rest of the time when I'm at school.
(With teacher approval, of course.) He's very good natured and
friendly (for now), so I think this might work well. And think of
the worldview he'd have! I argued philosophy and the origin
of the universe with my uncle when I was 11 and 12, and I still do,
I'm hoping he'll have the same kind of attitude that I did
Answer: -regarding Pagan homeschooling, If you are a CMA membr, there was a notice

-I personally think that by already reading to your son you are doing a
good thing. Babies know a lot more than we give them credit for. And
while I unfortunately do not know of a "pagan-friendly" school system
(don't I wish!) from my own experience, I know that what you learn at
home, if it's taught in an open-minded atmosphere, can mean a lot more
for a child than what he or she learns in conventional school. My
mother always "home schooled" me during my summer breaks from public
schools. We read great books, like Carson McCullers' "The Member of the
Wedding" when I was between 4th and 5th grades, for example. I look
back on those times with my mom with great fondness. So, while I'm not
giving you a totally straight answer, I say more power to you in
educating your son.
