Private Homeschool Package
|
Question:
Does anyone know if starting a homeschool in the middle of the year is
legal in CA.?
My daughter needs to be homeschool she does not do well in the public
school setting. She is very bright and is not a discipline problem. I
purchased a homeschool pkg from the Calvert School in
Baltimore, Maryland. I also included the teacher advisory service. So
far I have been told that the
consequences of my actions could have me fined, jailed or both and that my
child would be removed from my home. I also have several other children
who are in public school. I have no plans to remove them as they are
doing quite well. I am extremely stressed over all the conflicting advice
I have received so far. Does anyone know what the proper procedure would
be in my case? I have contacted state offices, they said I had to fill
out affidavit. I was told they will use the affidavit to bust me. True
or False? I feel I am doing the best thing by my daughter and have tried
to pick the best program I could afford. Homeschool through the school
district by the way is not an option in my case.
Answer: Sounds like you need 3 things:
-To read up on the state regulations
regarding homeschooling (I'm not sure that local government has
anything to say about it) as well as your school district's
implementation of the state's regulations;
-To avail yourself of
competant legal representation, such as the Home School Legal Defense
Association (don't have their number handy--Perhaps others will
chime in with it?) who specialize in homeschooling and dealing with
uncooperative school districts;
-To make contact with local homeschooling support groups.
At first, homeschool groups seem to be nowhere, but after looking
for them you may find, as I did, that you're surrounded by them.
I've read posts from other Californians who say that at the local
level the authorities are extremely hostile, but once they're "put
into their place" that they were no problem. I hope that this is
your case too.
