Questions of Secular Home School?

Question:
Is there another group that provides support and leads on materials for SECULAR home schooling? It would be nice not to have to wade through the over-zealous soreheads spouting about the decay of civilization and using religion as an excuse for their own closed mindedness. I am finding it very hard to locate good secular curriculum materials. Isn't it possible to teach a kid math without teaching him "Jesus is Lord?" (zealots please don't reply, I already know the speal. In particular I need a science curriculum that is exciting for kids from 9-11 and based on modern science not the 14th Century superstition that most of them seem to try and pass of as science. Its not bad enough that these books have to claim that Genesis 1 is fact but they do not even teach science itself correctly. How could we go about starting a new website for home-schoolers who are interested in bringing their children up to date as to what we know about the world and ourselves and teaching them how to add to that knowledge but are NOT interested in supressing or perverting that knowledge?

Answer:
- Although I am a christian and we might differ on many particulars, I agree with you about the need for a secular home school website. I have stayed off the 'christian' one because of the doctrinal stridency there. I work with many families all across my own state. When I was lobbying the state legislature I represented all families, much to the dismay of a few who immediately formed a 'christian' home school group whose early agenda consisted of misreading the law and demonizing me. So I am wary of those who protest too loudly of their faith. I sense some frustration in some of your comments. What we can do is simply continue this thread as a purely secular one. There are many great things all homeschoolers have in common, many things to share. Perhaps if we all agree to limit our discussion to those things we have in common, and remain sensitive to our differences (no trashing of the Bible, or of Science, for example) we might be able to make some real progress. I'm game. How bout you? - Count me in! It's very difficult to find a group that's not predominately Christian. My children have been raised to believe in a loving, forgiving God, who cherishes each of us. My daughter, now 12, has just entered a local public middle/high school for gifted kids, after 6 years of homeschooling and we just took our son, age 6, out of school after one quarter. We work mostly in an "unschooling" environment, with some more formal study in math and science.
