Texas Home School

Question:
How would I find out if a homeschool diploma from a home school in Texas would be honored by colleges, etc. My step daughter is attending what sounds like a "shady deal" in Texas and I would like to know that she is being properly educated.

Answer:
- In Texas, homeschooling has the same legal standing as any private school according to a Texas Supreme Court decision. If your step daughter were attending a government school then you would have more reason to be concerned if she were being "properly educated". In states, unlike Texas, where standardized tests are required, home educated students on average always do far better than government schooled students. As far as admission to a college, as with other private schools, it depends upon the college. Major universities such as the University of Texas, Texas Tech, and the University of Houston admit homeschooled students. In the case of the University of Houston, where I have checked, admission is a little more difficult because they admit based on class standing and standardized test results. They told me that they automatically assign home educated students to the lowest quarter for class standing so they have to have the highest ACT or SAT test scores for regular admission. A homeschool father has compiled a list of 100's of colleges known to accept homeschool students. The information can be found at: http://pages.prodigy.com/S/C/D/School_is_dead/Learn_in_freedom.html By the way, we home educate our 14 and 16 year old sons in Texas.
